LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST
Reports to: Principal
Dept./School: Assigned Campus
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Length of Contract: 200 days
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Supervise and manage the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure the library/media center is involved in the school's instructional programs.
Qualifications:
Education/Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Valid Arkansas librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of library science
Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Five years of experience in education in a public school setting preferred

- Plan to integrate the library media program with the district curriculum in all subject areas.
- Maintain a well-organized and attractive library setting.
- Provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of campus and district learning resources.
- Assist staff and principals with planning school library programs to meet identified needs.
- Assist in curriculum guides for libraries.
- Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of library/media center resources.
- Maintain a flexible schedule to allow the greatest availability of the media center to students.
- Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity levels and interests.
- Use effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
- Carry out discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.
- Model and encourage student interaction, promoting positive attitudes toward the school library.
- Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
- Comply with federal and state laws, Arkansas Board of Education rules, and board policies in the library/media services area.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Maintain inventory of books, technology, audiovisuals, etc.
- Assist the technology director and principal in the dispersal, collection, and maintenance of student-issued technology.
- Coordinate the schedule of events with principals.
- Other duties assigned by principals.
